Active Lifestyle

Wear out or rust out.

At Waywest we believe movement is the secret to vitality.

When we talk about movement, its whatever movement feels good to you. From a gentle walk around town to the long slog up a mountainside. We value the varying degrees of movement all of you adventurous souls are up to, and we will meet you wherever you are.

You can see we don’t necessarily mean you have to be an athlete for our massage to be beneficial, thats why we use the term Active Lifestyle instead of Sports Massage.

A lot of our active lifestyle folks are indeed athletes. We work with rock climbers, mountaineers, cyclists, runners, backpackers etc and we love to push our bodies in those ways as well.

But a lot of the active lifestyle work we do is for those of you with repetitive movement in your job and daily life. Think of nurses, parents with small children, hair stylists, those of you working on your house projects and gardens..see what we mean?

On the flip side, some of you have sedentary jobs: sitting at desks, driving around town etc. And you yearn to feel less stiff in your movement when you transition from work to play. This is another example of the goals for an active lifestyle. We want you help you feel the best you can in your body.

To us, an active lifestyle is a variety of adventures big and small.

Waywest Walkabouts

The inspiration for Waywest Massage came while I was walking uphill.

I Walked uphill for a long time. Noticed my breathing, felt my muscles, became aware of tight areas, and was so thankful for my body and the presence I felt mentally.

And then I realized how I notice similar thoughts bubbling up when I receive a massage. Deeper inhalations, nervous system tuned in, feeling grateful, mentally clear. The connection of our outer and inner world.

The perfect peace and ease I feel in nature can be found when I connect back to my body. Bringing awareness to your own body, movements, and where you are in space and time. Getting in tune with the outside to help notice what’s going on inside.

Thats what Waywest Massage is. A venture into thoughtful self care.

I love going outside. I love massage. And I love our capable bodies.

whats different about thai massage?

Some things that are different from the table massage you’re used to:

  1. Theres no table. The massage is still in our beautiful treatment room, but the table is moved to the side and we put a supportive mat on the floor where you will lie comfortably during the session.

  2. You are fully clothed. If you are ever feeling uncomfortable about the idea of getting undressed for a massage this is a great option for you. Wear loose fitting clothing similar to what you would wear to a yoga class. This allows your massage therapist to move your limbs and stretch your body with ease.

  3. More movement. Your massage therapist will use their hands, elbows, feet, and knees to apply different pressure and stretches to your muscles. During some stretches your therapists creates leverage by using their own body to stabilize yours. With a focus on joint mobilization and increasing your range of motion there will be plenty of passive stretching during your session.

  4. Pain Relief. Massage can be deeply relaxing, but Thai massage has the ability to create deep change in your muscle tissue releasing tension, restrictions and leaving you with a lot less pain in your body.

Some people report that Thai massage can be painful, but I think that comes down to communication, same with regular Table Massage. Just let your therapist know if anything feels too deep or uncomfortable and they will adjust for you.

“I encourage my clients to try Thai massage – an ancient healing system involving deep compressions, stretches, and gentle passive movements to increase range of motion, loosen tight muscles, and improve circulation. It can leave you feeling invigorated or deeply relaxed, help alleviate pain, and generally leaves one with an overall sense of wellbeing.

I have had countless massages over the years but, Miranda's massages are hands-down the best I've ever received.  Her technique is strong and knowledgeable, finding all the trouble spots and working them out with a skill I've never before experienced.  She does not give frou frou massages, but a true healing experience.  The results are immediately felt and long-lasting.  She also gives stretching tips to help the massage work last longer, which I find to be incredibly beneficial.  The euphoria created inside my body and mind stretches for many days, when many massages lose their effects within a few hours.  Her energy is positive, confident and relaxing.  Her prices are a steal for her incredible services and her studio is cozy and comfortable.  She puts you at ease and then blows your mind.  Once you've had a Miranda massage, you won't want to go to anyone else.  Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

I've been to massage therapists all over Portland and have been more impressed with this service than I've ever been elsewhere.
I have chronic headaches and pains in my back and legs. Getting massages consistently has helped with daily pain, sleeping, digestion and all over well being. I've been impressed with what the routine practice has done for my health.
Miranda is great! She's attentive and listens to the words you say and what your body is expressing. It's not lip service when she asks how you're feeling. I've never had the same massage twice which is unreal! Every time the experience is different and catered to what my body needs. Definitely go see her if you can!

Monica's Thai Massage helped me out a ton.  After years of accrued sports related injuries and cranky stiff muscles, Thai massage is the perfect wellness addition to staying limber.  Monica's technique is perfect and she creates a welcoming and supportive space to work.  Already can't wait to go back!

At Waywest, you'll find more than just a massage... You will discover a new way of life. Miranda, Mariana, and Monica comprise the health team I choose to go with and would recommend to anybody who is interested in professional massage therapy.

The first time I was in a motor vehicle accident, Waywest made it SO easy to go through the insurance companies and get the care I needed fast. They really do care about helping me recover by increasing my range of motion, and decreasing pain.

I always look forward to my sessions because these women are very knowledgable. I have learned so much about anatomy in general through their work.  Each with their own unique style, the 1 thing they all have in common is that they know exactly how to improvise and effectively craft each session to my specific requests.

The benefit of going with Waywest extends beyond just the sessions themselves, too. I always see them on my phone or computer providing helpful self-care health tips - or even just reminding me to take a break from the screens and go stretch! So, GET INTO their blog, and start believing in the power of stress relief!

Oh yeah - and they do everything here by the way: deep tissue, swedish, thai, gua sha, cupping, hot stone massage, yoga, you name it...

Miranda is a healer in every way.  I first started going to Waywest to help with the healing process of a surgery.  My dr prescribed acupuncture as part of my rehabilitation and my acupuncturist recommended I visit Miranda to aid in my muscle healing.  The combination of care, along with my physical therapy, was just what I needed.
The care I received from Miranda kept me returning as a religious customer.
The best way I can describe it is:  I enter the space on Dekum thinking about everything I HAVE to do.  It is scheduled on one of my days off and like most people my to do list is extremely difficult.  I leave Waywest thinking about what I WANT to do.  It is crucial that we find a way to get to that point.
I am eternally grateful for the care I get.  I feel heard.  I feel relaxed.  I feel cared for.
My side note would be that I am body sensitive and I have only felt 100 percent comfortable with Miranda.
Do something good for yourself!  See Miranda!  She is an incredible ray of light and goodness!  She will heal your physical and mental pain!

One of my best ever massages, as she anticipated where I needed the most work after a half marathon. Came away energized and ready to run again and the next day I wasn't even sore!!

-Donovan M.

My massage with Mariana was wonderful! The booking experience was very easy. I liked the massage space, it was beautiful and calm. I asked the owner Miranda a question while I was booking and she was very responsive, I felt like I was in great hands. Mariana gave me the best massage I've had in Oregon. I can't recommend this team enough!

-Sarah Kate N.

I highly recommend Waywest Massage if you're looking for a lovely massage in a bright and calm space. I've had appointments with both Miranda and Mariana and I would highly recommend each of them. With appointment times in the evenings and on Saturday & Sundays, there is plenty of flexibility with scheduling. Mariana showed me a number of stretches and gave me a few tips to manage tension in the weeks between massages which I really appreciated, too. Enjoy!

-Anne K.

I visited Miranda due to a sport's related overuse injury. She asked me thoughtful questions prior to the massage so that she fully understand what type of treatment I needed. The massage was great and successfully eased my pain and helped me recovery from my injury quickly. Highly recommended!

Meet Monica

My fascination with the human body – how it moves and functions – initially developed through my studies of anatomy and physiology during my undergraduate degree in Nutrition. I, then, completed a 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training program at The Bhaktishop Yoga Center in Portland. This expanded my passion for helping people live healthy and active lives and eventually led me to pursue a career as a licensed massage therapist. Through massage and yoga I get to share my knowledge about anatomy and physiology, alignment, and structure to empower my clients to understand their own bodies and leave them feeling balanced and at ease.

I bring a calm, grounded presence to the space I’m working in which translates to my clients so they can feel relaxed and more present in their own bodies. I encourage my clients to try Thai massage – an ancient healing system involving deep compressions, stretches, and gentle passive movements to increase range of motion, loosen tight muscles, and improve circulation. It can leave you feeling invigorated or deeply relaxed, help alleviate pain, and generally leaves one with an overall sense of wellbeing.

My approach to massage is to bring the body back into optimal shape to prevent injuries and illness so clients can enjoy a more active and healthy lifestyle. As an avid rock climber and yoga practitioner I know and appreciate firsthand the importance of having a healthy body in order to enjoy my favorite activities.

Meet Mariana

I don’t want to give a standardized massage, a formula to apply to all clients.

I want to hear about what you need the day of your massage.

  • Do you want to conquer an old injury?

  • Do you have an achy elbow but also your school finals are days away?

  • Or, is relaxation the goal...

If we work together, you communicating and me listening, we can acknowledge where you are and make space for change.

Our body is our oldest friend. When we strain one area, our muscles recruit their resources to keep us from re-injuring the area or from feeling weakness or pain. In time the body’s well-meaning support can cost us our natural balance and ease of movement.

My work is directed at your body’s holding patterns, letting them know that it is okay to relax, okay to share their work, and okay to be strong again.

Art in it's many forms has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember.  When I create a new body of artwork I research the subject, imagine a new interpretation and express this using my hands to create.  For me, massage has a similar creative element.  I research and continue to learn about the body and its many varieties, I imagine through the surface of the skin to build a picture of your unique structures.  Through my hands I work to create the change, relaxation, and restoration that you ask for.

Meet Miranda

I’ve liberated shoulders, helped free stuck ankle tendons, and loosened the hold of chronic muscle pain all in the name of moving with more ease and keeping you doing what you love.

After eight years as a licensed massage therapist all the amazing moments seem to blur together, but what I love most is working magic on your muscles to help you continue to engage in the things that bring you joy: biking, hiking, climbing etc…

I believe being active and time spent outdoors is essential for us humans to be feeling our best. However we’ve all experienced injuries sustained from movement or the lack thereof, and that can really get us down. I’ve found that massage therapy is such a beneficial tool to maintain muscle health and get you back to doing what you love with less pain and more awareness in your body.

My calming demeanor, interest in anatomy, and desire to do good in the world brought me to the world of massage. I’ve got an effortless and specific style of discovering the areas you didn't even realize were causing you trouble. My goal is to provide a massage that is gentle yet effective leaving you mentally clear and physically lighter. Massage can be deep, but doesn't have to be painful to work. I read between the lines of your muscles and provide a treatment so you are renewed and ready for your next adventure.

My clients are an inspiring collection of bodies in motion. I work with cyclists, rock climbers, ironman competitors, mountaineers, cross-fit folks all at varying degrees of skill and ability - The most important thing is we are all out there trying our best. We play hard and have fun, then we take care of our muscles and get back to the grind.
